Parts of Penang flooded after non-stop rain (Updated)

GEORGE TOWN: Several low-lying areas of Penang are flooded today after non-stop rain.
Among the affected areas are Kampung Sethu and Sungai Bakap in South Seberang Prai where 22 houses are inundated.
Affected areas in Central Seberang Prai include Kampung Baru Simpang Ampat where 20 village houses are flooded.
Other places in mainland affected are Jalan Tembikai, Jalan Bukit Tengah, Taman Usaha, Taman Senangin, Lorong Usahajaya, Taman Ping Hwa, Taman Nibong Tebal, Taman Sukun, Bukit Teh, Taman Amra, Taman Desa Damai, Taman Makok, Tama Merak and Taman Impian.
When contacted Penang Exco for Welfare, Environment and Caring Society Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh confirmed these areas were flooded.
Phee said the situation was under control and the state agencies had been alerted.
“We have our man on standby since yesterday evening,” he said.
Meanwhile, in Balik Pulau an uprooted tree has blocked part of Km5.5 of Jalan Tun Sardon, causing a traffic snarl. Currently, only motorcycles can use the access road to Bayan Baru and Balik Pulau.
Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Public Work Department (PWD) are currently clearing the road.
In Sungai Pinang, water level has risen to 2.01m surpassing the warning level of 2.0m at 7.20am.
Reader Liza Nusi who contacted theSun said there are about 50 houses flooded with water in Teluk Kumbar since this morning.
She said non-stop rain since 3am had caused villagers to move their belonging to a higher place.
Speaking to theSun Norzali Bahari, 45 said this is the second time his family has to clean their house after the first wave of flood hit the state last week.
He said this is the worse he experienced so far and said this was caused by the high tide season currently.
"I thought it has ended, who knows it come again," he said.
Norazli a factory worker said he hopes that state government will do something to help those affected by the floods.
Another villager Mohd Zamri Omar, 46 urged the authorities to act fast in solving the issues.
He said over the 10 years floods have been a norm at this villages and said widening of the river near Teluk Kumbar must be done in preventing future flood.
Last week about 100 areas in Penang was hit by flood after a heavy down pour that were caused by a inter-monsoon phenomenon experienced by the northern states in the peninsular of the country.
