KUALA LUMPUR: A 26-year-old unemployed man claimed trial at the Sessions Court today for stealing the mobile phone of an American tourist at the entrance of Majestic Hotel on Sept 4.
Muhammad Aliff Haikal Abdul, made the plea after the charges were read to him in front of Judge Shamsudin Abdullah.
The man was charged with stealing an Iphone of the American and intentionally causing fear in the incident that happened in the wee hours of the morning.

The prosecution was brought against Aliff by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurakmal Farhan Aziz according to Section 392 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail sentence of 14 years and/or a fine or both.
Nurakmal suggested that the court refrain from granting bail until the completion of trial on the basis of the severity of the case.
Earlier, lawyer for the accused Salahuddin Salam appealed for the court to allow for a lower bail on the grounds that the accused parents could not afford it.
The court fixed Oct 13 for mention of the case and allowed a RM10,000 bail with one surety on condition that the accused reports to the nearest police station once a month and refrains from disturbing the witnesses of the incident.
In a video that went viral on social media, a man on a motorcycle who is believed to be Aliff, quickly rides up to two tourists who were at the entrance of the hotel speaking to one of its staff.
The man then snatches the mobile phone from the tourist in a flash before anyone could react and rides off.
Police nabbed the suspect on Sept 12, they also revealed that he had prior records for snatch thefts and is believed to be connected to 13 cases.
