FOURTEEN years after her last adventure, the video game icon is due back on the big screen in a reboot scheduled for March 2018. Angelina Jolie is replaced in the role by Swedish actress Alicia Vikander, who plays a younger and more vulnerable version of the intrepid explorer.
The new "Tomb Raider" film focuses on the younger days of Lara Croft, before she became a hardened warrior capable of extraordinary physical feats. The movie follows the 21-year-old British character as she embarks on a quest to solve the mystery of her father's disappearance, seven years earlier. This takes her to a mysterious island off the coast of Japan, which is home to a legendary tomb, the last place her father was seen alive.
The film is based on the video game "Tomb Raider," released on consoles in 2013, which was in turn a reboot of the franchise retracing the origins of the famous heroine and how she became a fearless adventurer.
If the movie proves a hit, it could be the first in a new series. The film is slated for release March 16, 2018, with Alicia Vikander in the lead role, plus Dominic West, Wallas Goggins and Daniel Wu. The film is directed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug.
