BEIRUT: The Malaysian Battalion (Malbatt) in helping to rebuild Lebanon has launched the Malaysian Bazaar in the Marakah district to provide local communities with the opportunity to engage in business activities and interact with each other.
Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Johari Baharum said the Malaysian Bazaar was among Malbatt 850-4's programme, namely a Lebanese community programme.
He said the 1,700-square metre bazaar site that can accommodate various business activities was formerly an idle and unmanaged area before being taken over by the peacekeeping force to be developed.
"The Malbatt team met the mayor of Marakah and discussed the matter so that the area is upgraded to a business bazaar.
"The project received good response from the community in Marakah and this shows that the Malbatt 850-4 team had discharged its duties responsibly," he told reporters after opening the bazaar on Thursday.

Mohd Johari said the local community was deeply grateful for Malbatt's efforts in helping them restore the situation in Lebanon in terms of infrastructure and economy.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Marakah, Adeel Saad expressed gratitude and thanked Malbatt 850-4 for the success of the programme.
"I really appreciate Malbatt's every effort in Lebanon for improving the economic infrastructure and restoring the situation here," he said, adding that he hoped more such projects would be carried out by Malbatt in the future. — Bernama
