KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) holds its 71st annual general meeting this weekend at the Putra World Trade Centre, and the hot topic is expected to be the Barisan Nasional party's preparations for the next general election.
MIC secretary-general Datuk A. Sakthivel advised the delegates to make use of the meeting as a platform to propose ideas and strategies that can help the party face the 14th General Election (GE14) which becomes due in June next year.
"This is the last AGM before GE14. Therefore, the delegates will surely discuss the preparations for the general election.
"They have to discuss the strategies to regain the confidence of the Indian community in MIC so that the party can recapture the seats lost in GE13 while retaining our current seats," he told Bernama.
Sakthivel said the two-day meeting would also discuss issues related to welfare, the economy and education as well as strategies to empower the Indian community.
About 4,000 delegates, including leaders of branches nationwide, were expected to attend the meeting, which will also discuss and approve the annual reports for 2016.
Asked about rumours that amendments would be made to the party constitution at the AGM, Sakthivel said the matter was still under discussion and would only be known at the meeting.
He also said that party president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam, who is the Health Minister, was scheduled to host the traditional presidential dinner for delegates tomorrow at the PWTC.
Sakthivel expressed confidence that the AGM would proceed smoothly without any disturbance from supporters of former party president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel because, he said, 90% of the branch chairmen now supported the leadership of Dr Subramaniam. — Bernama
