Muslims usher in Maal Hijrah 1439 New Year

KUALA LUMPUR: Muslims in the country ushered in the Islamic new year of Maal Hijrah 1439 tonight on a moderate scale with recitation of Yasin and thanksgiving prayers as well as gatherings.
In KUALA LUMPUR, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V attended the reciting of Yasin and thanksgiving prayers at Federal Territory Mosque, here, in conjunction with the national-level Maal Hijrah 1439 celebration tomorrow.
His majesty arrived at 7.30pm and he was welcomed by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
In KELANTAN, Tengku Temenggong of Kelantan Tengku Tan Sri Muhammad Rizam Tengku Abdul Aziz joined a congregation of over 5,000 at the Sultan Muhammad III Mosque in reciting year-end prayers led by Kelantan Mufti Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad before performing the Maghrib prayers.
In PENANG, Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas presented the state's "Tokoh Maal Hijrah" to Mohd Hussain Abdullah or also known as Sheikh Hussain Yee, 67, who is the founder and president of Al-Khadeem, a non-governmental organisation.
In NEGRI SEMBILAN, Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir and wife Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Aishah Rohani Almarhum Tengku Besar Mahmud attended the state-level Maal Hijrah celebration.
Tuanku Mukhriz presented the state's Tokoh Maal Hijrah to Malaysian Muslim Women Consultative Council chairman Prof Datuk Noor Aziah Mohd Awal.
In SELANGOR, Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah presented the state's Tokoh Maal Hijrah to former lecturer Dr Osman Sabran in a ceremony at Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque, which was attended by about 2,000 people.
Maal Hijrah will be celebrated in other states tomorrow. — Bernama
