Welfare of e-hailing drivers should be considered too

KLUANG: DAP National Political Education Director Liew Chin Tong said amendments to the Land Public Transport Act 2010 should take into consideration the welfare of e-hailing and taxi drivers.
He was commenting on the government's move to legalise e-hailing services.
Liew said the amended act only recognises, registers and deals with e-hailing companies without dealing with the drivers, the front runners of the industry.
He also said a tribunal should be formed within the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) to handle the complaints of all taxi and e-hailing drivers.
Liew said, currently, Uber charges drivers 25% of their fares as commission while Grab charges 20%.
He said e-hailing drivers put in their time, the use of their personal vehicles and their lives on the road for meagre incomes while e-hailing companies who have a global and regional presence take huge cuts and repatriate their profits overseas.
DAP has repeatedly called for the government to put a 15% cap on commission so that drivers earn slightly more from their hard work.
