Johor Baru: Johor Baru MP Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad said Malaysia should learn from other countries on how to manage e-hailing services.
He was commenting on Transport for London's decision not to renew Uber's private hire operator licence after the expiry of its current licence on Sept 30.
Shahrir said e-hailing services will continue to gain in popularity because users have become so comfortable using the internet data-based services to hire a car.
"Even traditional taxis have their own apps now," he said after officiating the "Bersama Demi Malaysia" programme here today.
He added that the authorities should place e-hailing services such as Uber and Grab on the same platform as traditional taxi services and comply to the same regulations.
Uber and Grab were legalised following amendments to the Land Public Transport Act 2010 and Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB) Act 1987 in July.
On a sepate matter, Shahrir who is also the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) chairman expressed confidence in Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd's (FGV) new chairman, Datuk Wira Azhar Abdul Hamid.
According to Shahrir, Azhar's agriculture and management background proves that he is the right man for the job.
"We need to give him some time," he said in response to some quarters who had questioned Azhar's appointment.
