ALOR STAR: The Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor today attended the Kedah-level mass wedding ceremony for 50 couples at Masjid Zahir here.
Accompanying her on arrival were Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah and wife, Datin Seri Hizam Awang Ahmad, as well as Majlis Walimatulurus Perdana 2017 Committee chairman, Datuk Suraya Yaacob.
Rosmah was seen taking pictures with all the couples, who were solemnised earlier in the morning, before sprinkling rose water onto the brides and grooms as well as joining them in the cake-cutting ceremony.
Meanwhile, Suraya said the mass wedding reception was a continuation of the initiative under the Kedah People's Aid (BARAKAH) programme for the youngsters, in which the state government organised pre-marriage course for free.
"The state government is concerned over the problems faced by the young people in getting married, especially relating to financial matters, and also wants to reduce the cross-border marriage issue which is illegal under Malaysian laws," she added.
Last year, 83 couples were married at the programme's inaugural mass wedding ceremony. — Bernama
