GUA MUSANG: More than 5,000 of 15,000 Orang Asli in Kelantan have converted to Islam since the 1980's.
Chief religious officer of the Kelantan Islamic Affairs and Malay Customs Council (Maik), Murtadha Abdullah, however, said this number was still small and efforts were being made to organise more aggressive programmes to draw the community to Islam.
"The Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) has placed 48 motivators while Maik has appointed 60 religious teachers in the community to carry out activities.
"We are confident these officers can perform the task of drawing more Orang Asli to embrace Islam," he told reporters after the closing of the state-level Maal Hijrah celebrations 2017 for the Orang Asli at Pos Brooke, here, today.
Also present was the deputy director of the Kelantan/Terengganu Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa), Azman Agadiron.
During the event, Muslan Alang, 56, and Zaleha Rami, 40, were recognised as Kelantan Orang Asli Maal Hijrah Personalities. — Bernama
