Five resolutions on improving Indian community's socio-economy

KUALA LUMPUR: The 71st MIC General Assembly today unanimously passed five resolutions aimed at raising the socio-economic status of the Indian community in this country.
The resolutions were making Rukun Negara central to the national ideology, carrying out preventive measures against social ills, implementation of a new education policy, MIC's preparedness in facing the changing political landscape and empowerment of entrepreneurs from the Indian community.
The resolutions were tabled by MIC deputy president Datuk Seri S.K. Devamany who said the first resolution which touched on the Rukun Negara outlined five main principles in shaping the aspirations of Malaysians.
Selangor MIC Youth chief Kajendran Doraisamy who debated on the Rukun Negara as the core of national development, said various arising issues of late had challenged the basic principles of Rukun Negara and this could divide the people.
Hence, he called on all parties including political leaders to refrain from issuing racist statements which could cause friction among the country's plural society.
Kajendran also said that a transformation agenda framework to foster national unity should be drawn up.
Meanwhile, MIC Puteri deputy chief B.Shivaranjani urged the government to set up a Social Ills and Gangsterism Special Monitoring and Prevention Unit.
She said the purpose would be for studying the causes, factors and implications of these problems in a comprehensive manner and to implement a holistic and effective intervention programme.
"Besides that, this unit is to help problematic youths return to the right path through counselling and education," she added.
The resolutions were unanimously supported by all the delegates present at the two-day assembly which was opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak at the Putra World Trade Centre, here. — Bernama
