KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak called on MIC to produce worthy, credible and winnable candidates to be fielded for the upcoming 14th General Election.
Praising the Barisan Nasional component party for completing its reforms and being in a better position of strength than previously, Najib said candidates must be able to appeal to all other races as well in order to earn their candidacy.
"The reality is that there are no seats in the country where the Indian community represents the majority despite being 7% of the total population.
"So for example, the Teluk Kemang seat in Negri Sembilan has an army camp.
"Therefore the candidate has to be appealing to the servicemen there in order to win," he told delegates during his speech at MIC's 71st annual general meeting, at PWTC, here, today.
Najib also complimented MIC president Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam for extending the party's sympathy to the victims of the arson attack that killed 21 students and two teachers at a tahfiz in Jalan Datuk Keramat last week.
"This is a clear example that MIC cares for the other communities, and this must be brought and shown at all levels (when canvassing for support)," he added.
