Jawi summons Turkish scholar Mustafa Akyol

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territories Islamic Affairs Department (Jawi) has summoned US-based Turkish scholar Mustafa Akyol for speaking without valid credentials on Monday.
Jawi also summoned the organiser, Islamic Renaissance Front's (IRF) director Dr Ahmad Farouk Musa.
Ahmad Farouk confirmed with theSun that Akyol was on a lecture tour in Malaysia when he was summoned by Jawi hours before his talk entitled "The Islamic Jesus: The Commonalities Between Judaism, Christians and Islam" at Nottingham University's Malaysia campus which was slated to be held today.
Akyol was summoned by Jawi under Section 11 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Federal Territories) Act, for the offence of teaching without official credentials from the religious authorities.
While Farouk was summoned for "abetting" Akyol, an offence under Section 43 of the same law.
Akyol is a vocal critic of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and is known for speaking out against both Islamists and secularists in his home country.
Since last week, Akyol has been featured in several events hosted by IRF, including a talk on his latest book The Islamic Jesus: How the King of the Jews Became a Prophet of the Muslims.
Farouk said that Akyol's lecture tour will continue during the latter's next visit to Malaysia as he has to cut short his trip and return to the United States.
