Lot of Domaine de la Romanée Conti explodes auction price estimate

A 12–BOTTLE assortment by the prestigious Burgundy winemaker found a buyer for €32,200 at an auction organized by Artcurial Paris on Sept 19 and 20.

Estimated at Ç22,000 to €24,000s, the lot of Domaine de la Romanée Conti was composed of 12 bottles of 1989 vintage wines bearing the Burgundy producer's most sought–after labels: Romnée Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Echezeaux, Grand Echezeaux and Romanée Saint–Vivant. The auction was won by a European collector.

The assortment proved to be the star of the auction which totalled €995,789 in sales.

Tales of the high prices fetched at auction by Domaine de la Romanée Conti wines hardly raise an eyebrow in the wake of the enormous sums paid for vintages by the Burgundy producer in recent times. In Cannes in July of this year, a 12–bottle case of assorted Romanée–Conti 1996 vintages was sold for a record 36,225 euros. A month earlier, a 1999 jeroboam by the winemaker was sold by Baghera in Geneva for €76,300. — AFP
