Immigration Dept detains Turkish writer

PUTRAJAYA: A Turkish writer was detained by the Malaysian Immigration Department at Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday.
Mustafa Akyol was subsequently handed over to the Royal Malaysian Police's travel control office (TCO).
Immigration director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali in a statement said the department's team at KLIA received a "detect and detain" request from the TCO on Akyol at 6pm the same day.
He said the Turkish was intercepted at counter 17, KLIA departure hall around 9pm.
Akyol, who is also a journalist, was expected to present a talk entitled, "The Islamic Jesus: The Commonalities Between Judaism, Christianity and Islam" at Nottingham University Malaysia at 2.30pm yesterday.
However, the talk organised by the Islamic Renaissance Front (IRF) was reported to have been cancelled after Akyol was summoned by the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department on Sunday. — Bernama
