GEORGE TOWN: Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is committed to looking after the interests of disabled persons on the island.
Mayor Datuk Maimunah Shariff said the welfare of this group needed to be taken into account to ensure they enjoyed the same quality of life as able bodied people.
She said the council's initiative could be seen in the state government's strengthening of local by-laws to create a friendlier physical environment for the disabled.
For instance, she added, efforts were made by allocating disabled parking spaces and also specially-designed toilets for these groups under the MBPP's initiative .
"It is a sustainable, inclusive and resilient effort by us," she said at a press conference.
Maimunah was speaking after attending the council's workshop on "The role of civil servants in creating an inclusive society" at The Top, Komtar today.
She added it was important to create a conducive environment to benefit the disabled and ensure their interests are taken care of.
