KUALA LUMPUR: The registration of Parti Ekonomi Rakyat Malaysia (Pekira) as a political party has yet to be approved as it has to undergo security vetting, said Registrar of Societies (ROS) director-general Datuk Mohammad Razin.
He said the vetting was part of the ROS' standard operating procedure in deciding on the registration of political parties.
"We are still studying the application and need to complete several technical procedures relating to the registration of the party now.
"There are two or three more steps we have to complete. We do not have a time frame to approve as political parties need to go through security vetting. When completed, we will process their application for approval," he told Bernama today.
He was commenting on the status of Pekira 's application by its president, Mohd Ridzuan Abdullah who alleged he had sent the application since May this year but had yet to receive any decision to date.
Mohd Ridzuan claimed the party had a membership of more than 16,000 since it was launched two months ago.
Pekira, a Barisan Nasional (BN)-friendly party was set up to champion the interests of entrepreneurs, small traders and to resolve the people's problems. — Bernama
