PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has warned the public against registering as voters online or through social media, claiming that the method was illegal and invalid.
Its chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the commission has found certain quarters spreading information through social media supposedly claiming that voter registration could be done online by simply sending a picture of their MyKad to a certain phone number.
"We would like to stress that the method is illegal. The method used presently requires the individuals to present themselves to the EC counters, any computerised post offices or through EC-appointed assistant registrar officers.
"They need to produce their original MyKad with them, fill in Form A and sign the form. After registering, applicants should receive a copy of Form A for future reference," he said in a statement today.
Mohd Hashim also warned that appointed assistant registrar officers who are found to be involved in conducting such registration methods would have their appointment stripped off immediately.
"In fact, they also face legal action for falsifying applicants' signatures," he said.
Mohd Hashim said the public should be more wary and not be duped into such messages online as it may lead to personal information being misused for other purposes.
