KOTA TINGGI: A factory which has been identified as the source of odour pollution in Singapore recently will continued to be monitored by the Johor Department of Environment (DOE).
State Health, Environment, Education and Information Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat (pix) said the state government had received complaints two weeks ago, however the source of the smell could not be identified then.
"They (Singapore Environment Department) had informed DOE and during the period, we could not find the source of the odour as it was intermittent due to changes in wind direction.
"Later the air quality in Singapore improved. Recently it happened again and this time we managed to identify one factory as the source for emitting the chemical odour," he told reporters after launching the 'Pengerang Clean Up the Beach' campaign at Tanjung Buluh, Sedili Kecil near here today.
Ayub said Johor DOE later ordered the factory in Pasir Gudang to improve its emission system after it was damaged in a small fire on Sept 20.
On Monday (Sept 25), a number of residents in several areas in Singapore complained of a strong chemical gas odour believed to be from an industrial area in Johor. — Bernama
