KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 42 Nigerians were arrested here from 2016 till Sept this year for drug-related offences, said City narcotics criminal investigation department chief ACP Adnan Azizon.
He said some of them were students at local institutions of higher learning.
"I just want to advise all colleges and universities to alert the police if there is any indication of possible students' involvement with drugs," he said during a press conference at the KL police headquarters here today.
Adnan was referring to the latest incident on Sept 28, where police crippled another drug ring involving foreigners and seized over 16kg of ganja and more than 67g of methamphetamines after police raided a condominium unit in Taman Connaught, Cheras.
Three Nigerian men aged from 29 to 30, who are students at a private college, were found with 0.56g of ganja wrapped in tin foil.
Upon interrogation, the suspects led the investigating team to another stash of drugs hidden in two bags inside the boot of a car parked at the condominium.
One of the bags contained 9.5kg of compressed ganja and the other had 6.9kg.
Another 67.4g of methamphetamines were also found in one of the bags.
The drugs found in the car boot are estimated to be worth RM43,800.
"Police believe the suspects could be connected to a larger syndicate operating in the Klang Valley," Adnan said adding that the drugs were meant for local distribution.
The suspects have been remanded for six days until Oct 4 to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
On June 19, former Federal narcotics crime investigation department director Commissioner Datuk Seri Mokhtar Mohd Shariff revealed a total of 379 Nigerians were arrested from 2015 till June this year for drug-related offences nationwide.
