Cancellation of beer festival up to local councils, not police: IGP

PUTRAJAYA: Police are not to be blamed for the cancellation of the Better Beer Festival 2017 as the decision is solely up to the local and municipal councils, according to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
He said that their role is in an advisory capacity, and whether or not the councils take their recommendations is entirely up to them.
"I have received many calls and queries blaming us for the cancellation but it is not up to us," he said.
"We only give our advice and recommendations, they can choose to hold it. They still can," he said at the 2017 Warriors' Day celebration here today.
He did however stress that there is intelligence pointing to a militant threat if the event had gone on.
Last week, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said it had rejected the organiser's application to hold the event after receiving an application for a permit on Aug 28.
The DBKL announcement came a week after PAS central committee member Dr Riduan Mohd Nor spoke out against the event.
He claimed that it would turn Kuala Lumpur into the “largest vice centre in Asia”.
