Police arrest eight individuals for the theft of gold bars worth RM2m

BUTTERWORTH: Police have arrested eight individuals, including three women, for the theft of seven gold bars worth RM2 million at Jalan Siram here.
According to Penang deputy police chief Datuk Roslee Chik, police had detained two individuals in Johor and another six suspects in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur on Sept 29.
Roslee said police had also seized two gold bars from one of the suspects.
He said the suspect had admitted to sell one gold bar and added that police are also tracking the buyers of the remaining gold bars.
Roslee was speaking to the media following a ceremony, where drugs to be disposed off were handed over to Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd at Jalan Besar here today.
On Sept 25, it was reported that three men had escaped with 10kg of gold estimated at RM2 million about 9.30am at Jalan Siram here.
In the incident, two robbers armed with knives, snatched the bags containing the gold from two workers of a gold processing factory, while another suspect was in a getaway car parked beside a delivery truck.
Roslee added that he believed the theft was an inside job, as it appeared well planned.
"Therefore, we are also investigating this angle too," he said.
Roslee said all the suspects would be remanded until Oct 5 for further investigations.
The case would be investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery and armed robbery.
