PETALING JAYA: The Sabah Wildlife Department has arrested one person in connection with the massive killing of green turtles in Sabah's east coast.
Department director Augustine Tuuga said the suspect was arrested on Monday afternoon and he hopes that more arrests would follow in due time.
"It is too early to make any conclusion over the case as investigation is still ongoing but we are optimistic that more arrest will be made in the coming days," he said when contacted.
He added that initial investigation showed that most of the turtles was slaughtered by the culprits for their meat and plastron, which is commonly used as an ingredient in traditional medicine.
Last week, a team of investigators from the department was sent to Pulau Bum-Bum off Semporna to verify reports of dead green turtles after photos of the carcasses went viral on social media.
More turtles carcasses were found floating in the waters near Pulau Mabul at 11.20pm on Saturday.
Green turtles are a protected species and are listed in Division 1, Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Preservation Enactment 1997.
Section 41(1) of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 provides for a fine of up to RM50,000, a jail term of up to five years, or both upon conviction.
