KUALA LUMPUR: The Terengganu government is very confident that collection for its Terengganu Fund for Rohingya will exceed the target of RM1 million before the end of this month.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman said that since it was launched on Sept 19, more than RM600,000 was collected in less than two weeks.
"Alhamdulillah (thanks to Allah), the response has been overwhelming … we are confident of exceeding the target because government-linked companies and the corporate sector have yet to chip in," he told reporters here today.
In a related matter, Ahmad Razif said the state government was in talks with Mercy Malaysia and Wisma Putra to send over 50 volunteers to Bangladesh to assist Rohingya refugees.
According to latest reports, more than 500, 000 Rohingya have fled Rakhine state in Myanmar to Bangladesh in the wake of a crackdown on the minority ethnic group in that country. —Bernama
