71 of 98 slots allocated for CWG 2018 filled: OCM

KUALA LUMPUR: The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) has filled 71 of the 98 slots allocated for Malaysia by the organisers of the 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG), at the Gold Coast in Australia, next year.
OCM president Tan Sri Tunku Imran Tuanku Jaafar said 10 National Sports Associations (NSA) had so far sent their shortlisted list of candidates for the CWG, including for team sports like men’s and women’s hockey, rugby and women’s basketball.
He said five NSAs – athletics, swimming, shooting, table tennis and triathlon – have yet to submit their list of athletes.
Tunku Imran said the organisers have also allocated 20 spots for para athletes to compete in five sports – track cycling, lawn bowls, swimming, athletics and table tennis.
The Malaysia Paralympics Council (MPC) have submitted names of 14 athletes thus far, he said.
“The final list would be finalised in March next year. We currently have shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei and squash queen Datuk Nicol David in the list,” he told reporters after chairing the Commonwealth Games Selection Committee meeting, here today.
The meeting was attended by representatives from 15 NSAs, namely badminton, basketball, table tennis, swimming, diving, gymnastics, shooting, lawn bowls, cycling, boxing, hockey, rugby, squash, triathlon, weightlifting.
In the 20th edition of the CWG held in Glasgow, Scotland, Malaysia won six gold, seven silver and six bronze medals with the gold medals coming from badminton, weightlifting, diving and squash. — Bernama
