Difficult to predict year-end floods: Dr Hamim

KUALA LUMPUR: The government cannot predict the possibility of major floods at the end of the year due to a change in the rain distribution and an unpredictable pattern with unusually heavy downpour.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Datuk Dr Hamim Samuri said the rain distribution pattern remains unpredictable.
"The rain pattern has changed ... it has become difficult to predict whether there will be floods or not, although the country is free from the El Nino and La Nina phenomenon this year.
This is due to the difficulty in assessing the rain distribution pattern," he told reporters after opening the 'Geomatics and Geospatial Technology 2017' conference organised by the Geomatic and Land Survey Department (GLS), Royal Institute of Surveyor Malaysia (RISM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), here today.
However, all the relevant authorities, people in the low lying areas and flood prone areas must be ready and prepared to face any eventualities, he said. — Bernama
