Building in Unimap campus catches fire

ARAU: The second floor of a three-storey building that houses Universiti Malaysia Perlis' (UniMAP) Centre for Industrial and Government Collaboration and Engineering Mathematics Institute (CIGC and IMK)) at the main campus here caught fire late this evening.
According to Arau Fire and Rescue chief Mohamad Firdaus Yusof the fire believed to have started at sunset, destroyed 70% of the second floor and the cause of the fire was still not known.
He said 23 firefighters from Arau, Kangar and Kuala Perlis fire stations were rushed to the scene after receiving a call at 7.27pm.
"When we arrived thick smoke could be seen billowing from the second floor. Some of the firefighters entered the floor to pull the ceiling for ventilation and the fire was extinguished at 8.07pm," he said when met at the scene.
Meanwhile, UniMAP vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal, said several important memorandum of understanding (MoU) documents were kept in the building, adding that total damage and losses could only be determined after a full investigation.
Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail who is also UniMAP chancellor visited the site of the fire along with several senior university staff. — Bernama
