PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak today launched the Malaysian Research and Education Network (Myren-X), a broadband service with a speed of 100 gigabytes per second, with an aim to enhance the learning and research process in public universities in Malaysia.
The initiative, first announced by Najib during the 2017 Budget tabling, was to ensure cyber infrastructure in all public higher education institutions are on par with other developed nations.
Myren-X would be available in 20 public tertiary institutions throughout Malaysia and would be expanded to other learning institutions in the future.
Najib said the cyber infrastructure would help in boosting the excellence of the country's education and research sector in the future.
"I am confident that Mren-X will not only provide us a modern and advanced cyber infrastructure, it will also create a widespread research and education ecosystem," he said.
"I urge members of the universities to utilise the infrastructure for the benefit of all, including by becoming application creators in cyber space," he said at the launch of Mren at the Dewan Tunku Canselor, Universiti Malaya today.
Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh and Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak.
Research and education network, or REN, is a collaboration innovation by researchers and educators around the world to benefit by the internet technology.
Najib said Myren-X was an upgrade to the Myren programme launched 12 years ago in 12 public universities nationwide.
However, the older version was incapable of supporting research and education activities akin to the top 50 universities in the world.
"This has caused our researchers and educators to be left behind in various fields especially in producing high impact research involving big data," he said.
