Two cops held over taking bribes

SUNGAI BULOH: Two police patrolmen were arrested by Bukit Aman's Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) on Monday for allegedly taking bribes from two foreign workers.
In the 8.20pm incident, four Bukit Aman JIPS personnel, who were on routine duty, saw the patrolmen questioning a foreigner in Jalan Perkhidmatan, Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh.
A police source said the driver of the patrol car had stopped by the roadside and detained a foreigner.
"The other policeman in the vehicle was seen asking the foreigner to get into the car. They drove to a gaming outlet 50m away. Moments later, a woman, a foreigner, approached the car. The man who had been detained earlier was seen exiting the patrol car," the source said.
The JIPS officers, who had been observing the situation, broke up into two teams – one to detain the two foreigners and the other to question the policemen involved.
"As the JIPS personnel approached the patrol car, the driver sped off and reached the Sungai Buloh district police headquarters.
"One of the JIPS personnel approached the duo in the patrol car and introduced himself as a policeman by flashing his authority card.
"Preliminary investigations revealed that the patrolmen, a constable 23, and a corporal, 35, were on night duty from 8pm to 4am."
The source said police then brought the two foreigners, both Myanmar nationals, to the same police station for questioning.
"The woman claimed that she was earlier contacted by the Myanmar man, who is a friend, and was asked to pay RM50 to one of the patrolmen.
"Both foreigners managed to identify the policemen involved. The JIPS personnel then detained both policemen and the foreign man for not possessing a valid travel document."
The policemen were detained for failing to arrest the Myanmar national, who claimed to be a cook, for an offence under the Immigration Act and for extortion.
In a similar incident in June, it was reported that former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar caught three patrolmen for conducting unauthorised checks on foreign workers in Kajang.
Khalid was driving in the area when he saw the policemen questioning a woman by the roadside.
Khalid then contacted the Semenyih police station deputy chief for clarification and was informed there was no instruction to carry out such an operation.
Khalid then ordered the trio to be punished for going against the rules.
