ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Johor government has re-established the state Road Safety Council (MKJR) in an effort to reduce road accidents by creating greater public awareness about road safety, especially among the young.
State Public Works, and Rural and Regional Development Committee chairman Datuk Hasni Mohammad said the Johor MKJR was reintroduced because it had been deregistered since more than 20 years ago, in 1992, and to make its role more comprehensive.
He was speaking to reporters after the launching of the Johor Road Safety Campaign logo in conjunction with the Johor Progressive Expo in Kota Iskandar, here, today.
The event was launched by Tunku Temenggong of Johor Tunku Idris Iskandar Sultan Ibrahim, who is also MKJR patron.
Hasni said 15 people had been appointed as members of the council, including national racing driver, Jazeman Jaafar, who is the deputy chairman II.
Jazeman and comedian Harith Iskander were also appointed as the celebrity icons of the road safety campaign, he added.
Hasni said 73,116 road accidents with 1,135 deaths were recorded last year, mostly involving motorcyclists and pillion riders aged between 16 and 25.
"The vision of the road safety campaign is to put Johor on par with developed countries by recording less than two deaths per 10,000 registered vehicles," he added. — Bernama
