PORT KLANG: The Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) has foiled an attempt to smuggle 10 containers of 'keruing' timber valued at RM500,000 via Westports here on Aug 22.
Its director-general Datuk Dr Jalaluddin Harun said the smuggling activity was detected since July 27 following nine online export permit applications made by a company in Pahang.
"We have seized the containers stuffed with about 130 logs with the cooperation of the customs and Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd following surveillance and a tip-off.

The timber is an export-prohibited item under MITB (Incorporation) Act 1973 which carries an imprisonment of up to three years or a maximum fine of RM250,000, if convicted, he added. — Bernama
