NIBONG TEBAL: A fisherman who fell into the river at Telok Kertang and was carried away by strong currents, was found dead on Monday afternoon.
South Seberang Perai district police chief Supt Abdul Shafee Abdul Ahmad said four men who were fishing at the Sungai Udang jetty here at 11.30am, heard Baharudin Baharom, 51, yelling for help in the middle of the river.
He said the men then took their boats out to the river in an attempt to rescue the victim, but were unable to get close enough due to the strong currents.
Abdul Shafee said the men then informed Baharudin's brother, who alerted the Fire and Rescue department.
He said at 12.40pm, the men once again attempted to rescue the victim, and found his body stuck to a piece of wood with a fishing net still in his hands.
Abdul Shafee said the victim's body was sent to the Sungai Bakap hospital for post-mortem.
He said the case has been classified as sudden death.
