KPDNKK mulls raising rate of claim for consumers at tribunal

JOHOR BARU: The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) is considering raising the amount of claim by consumers for purchase of goods or services in the Tribunal for Consumer Claims Malaysia (TCCM).
Its minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the move was aimed at ensuring that it (the rate of claim) was still relevant, besides being able to help the people because currently, consumers can only claim compensation for goods and services purchased to a maximum of RM25,000.
"So, we are studying what amount is reasonable, because we have courts all over the country, and sometimes these claims are nonsensical. Therefore, we will take views from all industries before making an announcement," he said at a press conference after officiating the Coca-Cola Entrepreneur Community Programme via KPDNKK at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) today.
According to information from the KDPNKK website, the tribunal came into force on Nov 15, 1999 as an independent body to hear and judge claims filed by consumers under the Consumer Protection Act 1999.
Meanwhile, touching on the issue of a supermarket in Kluang near here that was purportedly rationing the sale of cooking oil, Hamzah said the ministry would investigate the matter first, adding that there were many false claims on the Internet these days.
Recently, a picture of a cooking oil ration notice issued by a supermarket, limiting a family to purchase only two packets a day, had gone viral on social media. — Bernama
