PUTRAJAYA: The Road Transport Department (RTD) will be implementing two special operations, Ops Sisih 1 and Ops Sisih 2, in the month of November and December respectively and the target group for the operation would be express bus drivers.
JPJ director-general Datuk Shaharuddin Khalid explained the objective of the operation is to ensure the drivers are free from any traffic offences as well as not having any outstanding summonses.
"We will not hesitate to suspend those who are found with any outstanding summonses from driving until they have fully settled them.
"For this, we will be cooperating with the police and Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) in getting all relevant details and information prior to taking punitive action against the driver(s)," he said during a media briefing for recently the concluded Ops Tutup at JPJ headquarters today.
However, Shaharuddin stressed that their aim is not to punish the drivers instead it is to educate the driver(s) to follow the traffic laws.
He hoped that with the implementation of this operations, the safety of all road users and express bus passengers particularly during festive and holiday seasons are ensured.
On another matter, Shaharuddin revealed that up until Monday (Oct 9), the Automatic Awareness System (Awas) has detected 251,193 offenders.
"From Apr 15 until Oct 9, some 251,193 offenders were caught by Awas for speeding (229,319) and beating the red light (21,874).
"A total of 35,692 notices have been issued and the total compound collected so far under the system was RM 5.3 million," he said.
Asked if any of the offenders have been taken to court for legal action for failing to settle their Awas compound within three months of issuance, Shaharuddin said so far no such individual yet.
