UNHCR cardholder detained for drug distribution

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A Myanmar national who has a United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) card was arrested in front of a shop at Jalan Bunga Raya, here yesterday for allegedly distributing drugs.
Seberang Perai Tengah police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said police detained the 39-year-old suspect at 8.30pm and seized 150 ecstasy pills worth RM1,500.
"When detained, the suspect was believed to be sending drug supplies ... he has been actively involved in drug distribution since early this year and the police are tracking the syndicate that had supplied drugs to him," he said here today.
He added the suspect, who has been living in Malaysia for the past three years, had been placed under a seven-day remand from today in order to facilitate investigations.
Meanwhile, Nik Ros Azhan said police also detained a 38-year-old man believed to be involved in the distribution of ketum leaves and ketum juice in a raid on a vacant house at Mukim 17, Kampung Machang Bubok, here at 6.45pm yesterday.
He said police seized 10 plastic packets of ketum in liquid form, believed to have just been prepared, adding that the suspect had also been placed under a four-day remand from today. — Bernama
