PETALING JAYA: A robber who held up a cellphone store with a toy pistol took to his heels with an accomplice when the shop owner charged at them with a machete in Taman Puchong Utama, Puchong, on Saturday.
The two robbers had entered the premises at 5.45pm on the pretext of purchasing a cellphone and made enquiries with the store owner. A robber also asked the owner if he was alone in the store before both men left the place.
Witnesses saw them getting into their car, a green Proton Iswara Aeroback before returning to the store with an unknown item.
In a close-circuit security camera footage retrieved from the store, they were seen moving suspiciously while its owner watched from a showcase counter.
Moments later, a robber pulled out a pistol from a knapsack he carried and pointed it at the store owner.
The footage showed the victim rushing to the back of the store before emerging with a machete in his hand.
The terrified robbers made a dash out of the place and screams, believed to be that of the robbers were heard in the footage.
Subang Jaya police chief ACP Mohammad Azlin Sadari said the owner had decided to turn the tables on the robbers when he realised the pistol they had was a toy.
He said the robbers managed to escape and a hunt for them has been launched.
