PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) officer has found himself in hot water as the Home Ministry plans to take action against him over a lecture he gave on Sunday where he criticised the Johor Sultan.
Zamihan Mat Zain (pix) had, in a religious lecture at the Masjid Tengku Ampuan Jemaah in Shah Alam, said it was not right for Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar to disallow a Muslim-friendly launderette in Johor. The officer also labelled Chinese as "unhygienic".
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, when contacted, said the ministry would probe the matter and take immediate action.
"The Home Ministry will investigate and take action," he said in a short text reply to theSun when asked if the officer would be investigated for sedition.
Zamihan, who is also Sunni Organisation Malaysia (Aswaja) president, had said the issue of the Muslim-only launderette only gotten bigger because Sultan Ibrahim commented on it.
"There was a Sultan who had said Muslim-friendly launderettes are not allowed in his state. It's not right for the Sultan to say such things. These launderettes are meant to show that Muslims uphold cleanliness," he said.
The outspoken preacher also took a hit at the Chinese community, saying Muslim clothes could not be mixed with theirs as they do not wash up after urinating and defecating.
"And what about menstrual blood on their underpants? Or if they had hugged a dog, or spilled alcohol or food containing pork? If you (Chinese) want to enter a laundry, then just go to a normal one," he said.
When contacted for comment, a representative from Jakim said it was investigating the matter.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) president Datuk R.S. Mohan Shan said it was worrying how a religious officer could come up with a statement condemning the Sultan.
"And the insults he hurled on the Chinese cannot be condoned. I can tell that he's a racist. He's a religious department officer, the words he use should be polite, and not bring racial tension.
"It is very irresponsible of him. All I can say is that other religions are just sad to have this kind of religious officers coming up with this kind of statements," he told theSun.
MCA Religious Harmony Bureau chairman Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker said the view presented by the Jakim officer showed that he was narrow-minded and myopic, as well as failing to understand that all religions preach tolerance.
"The action of the Jakim officer is emotionally charged. He has also failed to respect the institution of the Sultan and is very un-Malaysian," Ti told theSun.
