Taiwan Expo to showcase 5,000 products

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 164 Taiwanese companies will set up 240 booths to showcase some 5,000 products and services at the 2017 Taiwan Expo to be held here from Nov 9 to 11.
Disclosing this at a dinner reception to celebrate Republic of China's (ROC or Taiwan) National Day at a hotel here last night, the representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, James Chang Chi-ping, said for the first nine months of this year, Taiwan had held 37 exhibitions, including machinery and halal food expos and e-commerce fairs.
Chang said as Malaysia's fourth largest foreign investor, Taiwan's cumulative foreign direct investment in Malaysia up to 2016 amounted to US$12.3 billion.
"Taiwan is also the eighth largest trading partner of Malaysia, and bilateral trade in 2016 reached US$14.1 billion," he said, adding that for the first eight months of this year, bilateral trade amounted to US$11.2 billion, which is a 24.3% increase compared with the figures for the same period last year.
"In 2016, Taiwan invested US$110 million in Malaysia. We expect the investment figures to exceed US$300 million this year."
Chang said in terms of education, more than 60,000 Malaysians have graduated from Taiwan's higher learning institutions in the last five decades.
Currently, there are more than 16,000 Malaysians pursuing tertiary education in Taiwan.
He said last year, 474,420 Malaysians visited Taiwan, a 9.95% increase from the 431,481 recorded in 2015.
"This year, from January to August, 310,026 Malaysians visited Taiwan, which is 16.9% more than the same period in 2016. We expect the number of tourists from Malaysia to exceed 540,000 this year."
He also disclosed that 300,861 Taiwanese visited Malaysia last year. "We expect the number of Taiwanese tourists to Malaysia to reach 330,000 this year."
Chang said under Taiwan's New Southbound Policy, and with continued support and assistance from Malaysians, the relationship between the two countries will become even stronger in the years to come.
