Fewer unwanted incidents in lock-ups since Smart system installed
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said since the installation of the Self-Monitoring Analytics Reporting Technology (SMART Lokap) system in February last year, the number of unwanted incidents at lock-ups had decreased.
He said the system also reduced the time needed to extract forensic evidence, compared to conventional CCTVs, should an incident take place.
"A total of 57 lock-ups in Klang Valley have been installed with the system.
"Since the installation of the system, the number of undesired incidents in the lock-ups has dropped, and even if it happens, the time taken by our men to retrieve the data for forensic investigations is lesser compared to when using conventional CCTV camera," he said.
He said this after attending the symbolic handing over of the Self-Monitoring Analytics Reporting Technology (SMART Lokap) system between the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and police.
He said police will apply for allocations from the government for it to be installed nationwide.
He said if the allocations were approved, police would look into installing the system at main lock-ups in cities like Taiping, Perak and Georgetown, Penang.
"It cost RM3.3 million for the 57 lock-ups in Klang Valley so if it is going to be installed nationwide it will surely need a lot of allocations," he added.
The Smart Lock-up system, which collects and analyses recorded data, is set up to detect unusual movements in lock-up cells as well as other areas inside a detention centre.
The system will then trigger the alarm at the centre's control room, alerting personnel on duty of the unusual movements, thus prompting them to conduct checks.
The system is also equipped with number plate recognition, which enables the police to identify vehicles that go in and out of the compound.
It was first installed at the Jinjang Centralised Lock-up Centre last year. Jinjang now has 60 cells fully equipped with the Smart system.
