KUALA LUMPUR: The green technology roadmap will help the sector achieve a revenue of RM180 billion and create more than 200,000 green jobs by 2030, said Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili.
He said this will be achieved via the Green Technology Master Plan which was approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday.
He added that the ministry will be seeking RM5 billion over the next five years to develop and implement this plan and the ministry will be asking for RM1 billion for a start next year.
"The masterplan outlines the country's strategic plans for green technology development while creating a low carbon and resource efficient economy.
"The masterplan provides a consistent framework to align the strategic goals of stakeholders across the country, enabling a concerted national effort that will leverage on green technology to balance the growth for economic interests," Ongkili told reporters after launching the 8th International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM 2017).
He said green technology such as solar power generation is the fastest growing sector and the ministry is willing to help those involved get green sukuk financing which provides a lower interest rate.
Ongkili said in 2010 the government introduced the Green Technology Financing Scheme (GTFS) which has been instrumental in enabling easier access to financing for green entrepreneurs, funnelling over RM3.358 billion in funds for more than 302 green projects.
He said once these projects are completed it will have the potential to generate RM6.468 billion worth of green investments, create over 5,000 jobs, and avert emissions amounting to 3.513 million tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent).
