PETALING JAYA: The government is open to having any qualified, potential Malaysians to run and operate the Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) 2.0, that will be launched in the near future.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said it would no longer practise the concept of only having a single, prominent corporation as it did previously with KR1M under Mydin Mohamed Holdings Berhad.
He said the individuals would be selected based on their capability and the potential that the stores in the locations provide.
"We will open this opportunity (of operating KR1M 2.0 stores) to any Malaysians. Not only to those big corporations, but also individuals who are capable to operate sundries in their areas.
"If corporations want to operate a KR1M store, by all means. But this opportunity will also be opened to individuals. Under this new KR1M programme, anyone can apply.
"We want to make sure there are KR1M stores nationwide," he said after the closing ceremony of the Program Citarasa Malaysia 2017, here, today.
Hamzah had, in August, said a revamped KR1M 2.0 would be launched soon by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, to replace the previous one.
This was following the government's decision to end its contract with Mydin after it was discovered that the KR1M stores were selling goods at prices higher than the market value.
Earlier, Hamzah also launched the KPDNKK product transformation logo, that would be required for local businesses to export their products, alongside the "Buatan Malaysia" logo.
He said the logo would be available for free for a limited time, and that it would soon be made compulsory for all local products that are to be exported.
He added that the logo will also act as an endorsement by the ministry that the products are of high quality, and help consumers make better purchasing decisions.
Hamzah said the decision to introduce the new logo was also due to the increasing number of misused and forged Buatan Malaysia logo.
