KUALA LUMPUR: Conventional taxi drivers and online transport service providers such as Uber and GrabCar are requested to contribute to the Self Employment Social Security Scheme under the Social Security Organisation (Socso) to enable them to enjoy its benefits.
Socso board chairman Tan Sri Dr Aseh Che Mat said so far the response of that group towards the scheme was very poor.
"We cannot predict when untoward incidents or accidents occur so they, drivers, are advised to take proactive steps by registering at any Socso branches," he said at a media conference after the Deepavali 2017 celebration in Wisma Perkeso, Jalan Tun Razak here today.
Also present was Socso chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed.
The Self Employment Social Security Scheme, among others, provides benefits on medical, temporary disablement and permanent disablement; constant attendance allowance; dependents; funeral benefit; educational benefit; vocational and physical rehabilitation; and Return to Work programme.
The scheme provides protection to self employed insured employees from job disasters including illness and accidents while undertaking work activities.
He said Socso also actively undertakes various promotional activities and programmes on the ground to promote the scheme to target groups.
The scheme under the provisions of the Self Employment Social Security Scheme Act 2017, which was implemented since June 1, provides protection for contributors for 12 months in the form of cash benefits to taxi drivers and their dependents besides providing medical treatment, physical rehabilitation and vocational training.
Earlier 80 individuals comprising single mothers, caretakers and orphans were feted and received goodies in the form of cash and rehabilitation equipment (wheelchairs).
Aseh said the Socso social responsibility programme saw the insured employees and their dependents being feted in conjunction with the Deepavali celebration that falls on Oct 18. — Bernama
