KUALA LUMPUR: Deepavali is the best time one can indulge in Indian traditional wear and make heads turn throughout the day and of course showcasing your best 'outfit of the day' especially in social media.
If there is one strong trend that will rule the runway as well as the stores for the festive season this year, it will be handloom dresses and kurta with a chic look, instead of going heavily on traditional attire.
Though saree and lehenga remain favourite, people are slowly shifting away from heavy embellished sequinned sarees and suits to minimalist and comfortable ones that give easy movement all day long.
Founder of Amitaruci, Tanesha Vinod believes that handloom materials are going through a revolution nowadays with the combination of Indian and western styles, especially among the young people.
"This season has been more about comfort clothing. Handloom fabrics are more soft and vibrant in colours. 'The Loom' is the name of my collection for this year in which I'm bringing out the famous handloom fabrics from all around India.
"Last year, I introduced Kalamkari, a type of hand painted textile, it was a hit and till now people love Kalamkari. This year I'm going to do Indo-Western attires using Madurai Sungudi Kattam Saree, Ikkat, Indigo, Kashish fabric and Banaras brocade.
All these fabrics are handmade and each fabric has its own unique beauty," she told Bernama, recently.
Based on her observation, she said that indigo-pink combo and grey-neon combo seemed to be the people's favourites this year.
"Basically, they prefer to go with long dresses with elbow length sleeve or the cold-shoulder sleeve that is incredibly flattering for women," said the designer, who was the winner of the 2nd Runner-Up for Best Eco Wear title in 2014.
According to Tanesha, printed fabrics were getting less favourable as many replicas could be found everywhere with cheaper price and low quality online.
"Handloom fabrics have their own beauty and for that, all my fabrics are carefully hand-picked by me.
Our Festive Collection Volume One were all sold within two hours and I'm extremely happy about it, The second volume is now on sale. We also do have non-Indian buyers as well because I did diversify my trendy modest wear to cater to everyone in Malaysia," she said.
Other trends on the rise are Poochampalli and Madras checked fabrics that have made a comeback as maxi dresses, pallazo, and even skirts.
Breaking the monotony of traditional way of styling, Regalia Fashion & Fabrics founder J. Rebekah said that feminine but easy movement chic outfit has been the most wanted fashionable look at the moment.
Her Madurai Chic Diwali collections and handloom maxi cotton dresses with some unique and contrast colours are among the top choices requested by many people.
"This year everyone is going for bright and lively colours. They love the mixture of classy and contrast look in their outfits. Hence I came up with my own runway collection for this year inspired by Indian Fashion Agora 2017 show theme, pop-India," she further explained.
She added that minimalist outfits would be the way to go with all the movements, visiting houses, bursting crackers, cooking and cleaning-up ,and at the same time exude elegance and glamour. — Bernama
