KUALA LUMPUR: Uniten student, Shashitharan Velosamy won the Southeast Asia (SEA) Region Speak Out for Engineering 2017(SOfE) Competition held at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya here today.
The Mechanical Engineering final-year student received 300 British Pounds and a certificate while second prize went to Jevons Quiambao Penaflor from University Teknologi Brunei, who received 200 British Pounds and certificate.
The competition, organised by Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Southeast Asia Region provides young engineers with an opportunity to demonstrate and develop their verbal and visual presentation skills and competence in public speaking.
Earlier, IMechE Southeast Asia Region chairman Matthew Thomas in his speech
said, jargon used in engineering was sometimes confusing, and conveying ideas and explanations to non-technical employers was a struggle.
"We, as engineers, live to solve different kinds of problem, but what are the solutions for, if one could not understand them?
"Engineers have to ensure the good work done can drive the economy, and they will only be able to do this with enhancement of skills to pitch effectively, ever complex and intricate ideas to investors and convince them to invest in them," he said.
He said SOfE was the platform for students to showcase their communication skills and encourage engineers to make ideas accessible to the community. — Bernama
