Housing Ministry to build PPR for former estate workers

TANJUNG KARANG: The Urban Well-being, Housing and Local Government Ministry is planning to build a People's Housing Project (PPR) to alleviate problems faced by some 300 former workers of two estates here.
Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar said a plantation company in Bestari Jaya has agreed to provide 5.2ha of land to the ministry for this purpose.
"While under employment the estate management had provided the workers with living quarters but when they grew old and could no longer work they were forced to leave.
"This is normal practice of companies which provide housing for staff, even civil servants have to vacate the government quarters when they retire or resign," he said after handing over Deepavali contributions to residents around Bestari Jaya here today.
Noh was commenting on housing issues faced by former estate workers of Ladang Mary and Ladang Sungai Tinggi.

Noh, however could not give the date when work on the project could begin as according to him there were several regulations involved, among them changes in land status and land ownership.
"However, I have already submitted this proposal for consideration in the 2018 Budget," he said.
Commenting on the poor attendance at the "Sayangi Malaysia, Hapuskan Kleptokrasi" rally in Petaling Jaya yesterday, Noh said it proved that the people were tired of the opposition's dirty tricks.
"People can now make an assessment of the opposition's political stance which is forever changing and their baseless allegations against the Barisan Nasional government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak," he said.
The media today reported that police estimated only 4,000 people were present though the organisers had expected a turnout of 100,000 people. — Bernama
