KOTA KINABALU: The federal government, through the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister's Department allocated almost RM500 million to upgrade and widen the road from Sabah Foundation to Tanjung Lipat here.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan said the 7km-long road would be upgraded to three lane dual carriageway, which include a flyover.
He said the allocation was approved following recent briefing and explanation from the state government and Works Department on the urgent need to upgrade and widen the road.
The minister said the allocation would be included in the 2018 Budget.
"The project will also connect the area to the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), which would be the biggest convention centre upon completion. If the road was not upgraded and widened, it will cause massive traffic congestion in the area," he told reporters here today.
Abdul Rahman said the federal government had also approved RM13.5 million to build a new 52.7km-long bridge at Jalan Mawilla Dua, near Kampung Gantisan di Sepanggar to replace the old bridge for the convenience of the people.
He said the bridge would also connect the area to the Sabah Royal Malaysian Navy base. — Bernama
