COX'S BAZAR (Bangladesh): The National Security Council (MKN) will coordinate delivery of humanitarian assistance to Rohingya ethnic community currently in refugee camps in Bangladesh, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The deputy prime minister said with MKN's aid coordination there was no issue of the assistance not reaching the beneficiaries.
"This is not my first visit to refugee camps. I have visited refugee camps in several countries but the conditions here are more pathetic.
"Looking at the sad situation here, I urge Malaysians to continue giving donations. MKN will ensure that the aid are channeled to the target groups," he said adding that with the coordination efforts, aid received could be streamlined to purchase essential goods.
He said the government would continue to encourage individuals especially nurses, doctors and hospital aides to register with MKN to take turns to assist at Cox's Bazar.
Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia was one of the first few countries to send aid to Rohingya refugees at Cox's Bazar, especially at Kutupalong Camp.
"Malaysia is committed to delivering continuous assistance through MKN and the five largest non-governmental organisations (NGOs) already in Cox's Bazar, will continue to provide humanitarian assistance.
"I am here today to deliver items required by the five NGOs.
"We thank the state governments and a philanthropist from Malaysia who donated aid worth US$100,000 (RM420,000) in support of the NGOs," he added.
"Meanwhile, at a separate event in South Kuthubdia, Ahmad Zahid handed over BDT400,000 (RM20,463) towards Baitul Sallah Mosque building fund.
The donation was raised through the MyCorps programme, a project involving Malaysian youths. — Bernama
