PETALING JAYA: The federal government has vowed to take over the rent collection duties from the Selangor state government for the Lembah Subang 1 People's Housing Project (PPR), despite having no agreement between the two parties.
Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government (KPKT) Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar said he was even prepared to face legal action if the state government decides to take the matter to court.
"If they want, they can take me to court. We won't pay. In fact, we will make a counter claim if they summon us," he told a press conference after attending a Deepavali celebration, here, today.
Noh said despite the PKR-led Selangor taking over the rent collection duties through Petaling Jaya City Council MBPJ) since 2008 – collecting over RM30 million – the federal government still had to fork out tens of millions of ringgit for maintenance.
"Since I became the minister, I have channeled RM30 million here for repairs and maintenance? Aren't the state government ashamed? You take the rents, but we pay the bills," he said.
Noh explained that the buildings and the land belong to KPKT, but rent collection duties were given to MBPJ since 2003 when Barisan Nasional was still in power in Selangor.
However, the PKR-led opposition won the state in 2008, subsequently taking over the rent collection of the Lembah Subang 1 PPR.
Noh added that those who start paying their rents to KPKT, instead of MBPJ, would be entitled to the rent-to-own scheme.
Previously, Noh had said that KPKT wishes to take over the management of the PPR back from MBPJ, but faced resistance from the state government which demanded RM60 million in return, which KPKT refused.
