Customs enforcement in Kenyir Lake to use drones, CCTV

HULU TERENGGANU: The Tasik Kenyir duty-free zone, comprising 339 islands, is expected to be the first in Malaysia to be monitored using satellites, drones and closed-circuit television by the Royal Customs Department.
Terengganu Customs director Aidid Tajuddin said the department had discussed with the Malaysia Remote Sensing Agency, Ministry of Science and Technology on the use of the sophisticated technology which will be fully operational by the third quarter of next year.
He said besides enhancing enforcement, the use of the three types of equipment would help to overcome the problem of congestion at the exit points in Tasik Kenyir.
"When the Tasik Kenyir Duty Free Zone in Pengkalan Gawi began operation in last Aug 1, many people complained of congestion that they had to wait for up to four hours during peak period to get through the Customs' checkpoint," he told Bernama here. — Bernama
