GEORGE TOWN: Tanjung Bungah state assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu of DAP has been opposing housing projects on hill slopes, including the one in Lengkok Lembah Permai, Tanjung Bungah that was hit by a landslide yesterday.
"Over the past three years, I have been protesting through various channels including the state legislative assembly and writing to the state government but no action has been taken," he told reporters when met at scene of the incident, here today.
Currently, he claimed that there were at least three hill slope housing projects underway in the area, while an additional 10 projects were in the process of being approved by the state government.
Teh hopes that the hill slope projects will be stopped immediately to avoid a recurrence of such tragedy.
He said the projects were also objected to by the residents there, but that was ignored by the authorities.

"The hillside area in Tanjung Bungah is a strategic area and it is profitable because it has a high property value and that is why more construction projects especially housing are being built here."
Teh said the state government and developers should take responsibility for what had happened.
A landslide on Saturday buried 11 construction workers at the site of an affordable housing block. Nine bodies have so far been recovered. — Bernama
